Description

 

Purpose of the Job

 

To deliver English lessons to year 7 and 8 students under the direction of the Deputy Head Teacher and Head Teacher in line with the school’s curriculum. To inspire and nurture the love of literature in students, with particular reference to key texts encouraged in the national curriculum. Teachers are required to ensure that children have excellent adab (character), love for knowledge and achieve well in their core assessments.

 

Planning, Teaching and Class Management

 

To teach classes of children throughout the school by planning appropriate teaching to achieve progression of learning for pupils through:

 

  • To implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for English for students in years 7 &8..

 

  • To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students

 

  • To facilitate and encourage a learning experience which provides students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential

 

  • To contribute to maximizing of student attainment

 

  • To share and support the school’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for personal and academic growth
  • To assist in the development of appropriate schemes of work.. To develop teaching resources, schemes of work, marking policies and teaching strategies in the curriculum area

 

  • To contribute to the curriculum area and department’s development plan and its implementation

 

  • To ensure department documentation and practice in relation to Health and Safety is in place and adhered to

 

  • To assist in the process of curriculum development in English so as to ensure the continued relevance to the needs of students, examining and awarding bodies and the school’s ethos

 

  • To instil the concept of adab throughout the school, with high expectations expected from staff and pupils

 

  • To be involved in the management and engagement of children on trips and assemblies

 

  • Using a variety of teaching and learning methods to meet the needs of all pupils across all subjects

 

  • Evaluating your own teaching critically to improve effectiveness

 

  • Managing parents and other adults in the classroom as appropriate

 

Monitoring, assessment, recording and reporting

 

  • Assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use them to improve specific aspects of teaching

 

  • Agree, monitor and evaluate the subject pupil progress targets to make a measurable contribution to whole school targets

 

  • Mark and monitor pupil’s work and set targets for progress, as per school policies.

 

  • Assess and record pupils’ progress systematically and keep records to check work is understood and completed, monitor strengths and weaknesses, inform planning and recognise the level at which the pupil is achieving

 

  • Prepare and present informative reports to parents

 

  • To use the school’s online system to monitor punctuality and attendance and take regular action to meet the school’s targets.

 

General Duties

 

  • Participate in relevant meetings with colleagues, parents and be involved in links with external agencies as part of curriculum enhancement, including extra-curricular activities and off-site visits
  • Support other members of the curriculum area and students as appropriate

 

  • Review your own professional development and maintain professional standards
  • Carry out any other such duties as the post holder may reasonably be required to do

 

Accountability

 

  • Supporting the Deputy Head Teacher & Head Teacher in accounting for the efficiency and effectiveness of the school to all relevant stakeholders

 

  • Work with the Deputy Head Teacher & Head Teacher to ensure the school’s accountability to a wide range of groups, particularly parents, carers, Trustees/Governors, Ofsted and the DfE; ensuring that pupils enjoy and benefit from a high quality education, for promoting collective responsibility within the whole school community

 

  • Provide timely and accurate data for the Senior Leadership Team to measure whole school progress

 

  • Reflect on personal contribution to school achievements and take account of feedback from others

 

Other Professional Requirements

 

  • Have a working knowledge of teacher’s professional duties and legal liabilities

 

  • Operate at all times within the stated policies and practices of the school

 

  • Endeavour to give every child the opportunity to reach their potential and meet high expectations

 

  • Contribute to the life of the school through effective participation in meetings and management systems necessary to coordinate the management of the school

 

  • Ensure professional development

 

  • Develop appropriate liaison with all teaching and support staff

 

  • Liaise effectively with parents and Governors and actively promote their involvement in the life of the school

 

  • Take on any additional responsibilities that might from time to time be determined

 

Subject Knowledge

 

An excellent awareness of current literature and genres, with particular reference to the changed specifications in Key Stage 3 and evolving changes to the GCSE English framework.
